Every day the world hears statistics about vulnerable children—numbers about poverty, orphans, and those unable to attend school. Yet numbers are often easy to overlook. They can feel distant and overwhelming, making it difficult to connect with the real lives behind them. But when we hear a child’s name, see their face, and learn their story, something powerful happens. What once seemed like a statistic suddenly becomes personal.
For me, this truth is not theoretical—it is my own story. Before helping lead WECO Uganda, I was a child without a home. I had been abandoned and eventually found myself living on the streets in Uganda. Survival became my daily focus, and many people passed by without noticing the child behind the situation. To them, I may have appeared to be just another child in need—another face in the crowd.

Everything in my life changed when one person chose not to look away. Her name was Maama Fatima. Instead of seeing a problem or a statistic, she saw a child who needed love and belonging. She welcomed me into her home and raised me as her own. Through her kindness, I experienced something I had long been missing—a family, encouragement, and someone who believed my life mattered.
From One Story to Many
That act of compassion planted a seed that would eventually grow into the mission of WECO Uganda. Today, our work is rooted in the belief that vulnerable children should never be reduced to numbers. Each child we serve has a name, a story, and a future worth investing in. Through education, mentorship, and community support, we strive to ensure that every child is known, valued, and given the opportunity to build a hopeful future.
When we choose to see the name behind the face, we do more than change one life—we begin to change the future of an entire community.
